The Khartoum North Potable Water Treatment Plant

Khartoum-pwtp1The Khartoum North Potable Water Treatment Plant is the biggest drinking water plant in Sudan. Now after rehabilitation and upgrade by Mena Water FZC it became the second biggest plant of these kind in Africa.

On 22.January 2013 the handover ceremony took place with attending of the Vice President of Sudan and the Khartoum State Governor.

During the ceremony the Vice President of the Sudan started the new Low Lift Pump Station to additional connect the suburb of Hag Yusif.

The history of this plant started in 1950 with a first plant to supply the Khartoum North town. Stepwise there was enlargement in the 1980, 1990 and 2000 with plant-part B and C to the capacity of 170 000 m3/day and drinking water also was delivered to Omdurman and Khartoum Sahafa crossing the Nile bridges. In the year 2009 the demand of water was rising over capacity and the total plant was in need of general rehabilitation.

MENA-Water got the contract to update the plant during operation with full capacity and to upgrade the plant in same time to 300 000 m3/day which means nearly double capacity. Fully civil rehabilitation of clarifiers and sand filters was accompanied by renewing the river pumps, new pipelines, new inlet building, installation of lamellas in clarifiers and total technical rehabilitation. In end of 2012 the aimed capacity was reached. And finally now in January 2013 the handover ceremony could take place with a big festival for the people of Khartoum State which are lucky for guaranteed drinking water supply.
